In today’s blog we’re going to learn a little bit about why self-care is so hard and how strengthening your consciousness will transform you from a helpless self-care kitten to a badass wellness BEAST.
But first, real quick, as a refresher, let’s jut remind ourselves what the layers of consciousness are.
1. THE UNCONSCIOUS
The deepest level, the unconscious, is where past experiences and emotions associated with those experiences are stored. It’s the data bank of your life.
2. THE SUBCONSCIOUS
The subconscious is regulating how we react to the world around us, making decisions based on how the incoming data compares with data logged in the unconscious. The subconscious also has control of our bodily functions including our emotions.
3. And then there’s today’s guest star, the CONSCIOUS mind.
The conscious mind is a total badass because it can:
And it’s the key to creating lasting, positive changes in our lives.
The conscious mind gets to choose our thoughts and actions, but only if it’s strong. Otherwise we fall victim to the power of the SUBconscious. The SUBconscious operates from a place of REACTION, whereas the CONSCIOUS mind has the ability to operate from a place of thoughtful, measured ACTION.
We can generally tell if we’re letting the SUBconscious drive the bus if we’re
And so on…
Sometimes when we try to quit an old habit or start a new routine we get frustrated and “fail”. It might lead us to beating ourselves up, quitting, or making up bullshit excuses why we can’t.
The subconscious can be very convincing, albeit unhelpful at times.
If you’re new to self-care, or it’s been a long-ass time, or you’re in a place of trauma/drama brain, yeah, it’s gonna be mother-lovin’ hard.
News flash, it’s supposed to be hard. You’re brain isn’t wired for it yet.
Let’s talk about learning to read.
When we learn to read, we first have to become familiar with letters of the alphabet. We have to train our brains to recognize the shape of each letter.
Then we have to learn how each letter sounds and practice saying them.
Eventually we put a few letters together and practice their sounds in the form of a word. Every time we read that word, the brain becomes more familiar with it.
Before you know it, you don’t have to carefully consider each letter in each word. You’re just reading.
You used the power of your conscious brain to create something concrete in your subconscious.
This is a fancy trick of the brain called neuorplasticity.
The brain is designed to grow and evolve so you can learn new tricks. It propels us through some pretty basic and obvious developments like learning to walk, talk, and read, but it also forms more abstract evolutions like how we navigate relationships and build the concept of self. The reason you have your beliefs, habits, rituals, preferences, prejudices, etc. is because that is how your brain was programmed.
And some of this programming can come back and bite you in the ass.
If somewhere along the way you picked up the habit of telling yourself that you’re dumb, ugly, weak, worthless, or some other nonsense, honey, you’ve been programming yourself with unnecessary bullshit. Same goes if you're using these labels on others.
We’re better than that.
So, if you tell yourself something is too hard, then it’s going to be too hard.
If you tell yourself, I can’t, then guess what, you can’t.
But if you reprogram your brain (using the power of your conscious mind), I’m telling you that you can. And I’m not telling you because I like you or because you deserve it (though both reasons are possible true), I’m telling you because your brain is DESIGNED to adapt to change.
You just need to strengthen your consciousness. ...I'm speaking from experience here, friend. My consciousness used be flabbier than my abs, and they're pretty fucking flabby.
Learning to override the nonsense chatter in your subconscious is going to change your life. It will make any self-care trick I throw at you in the future more attainable. And it will empower you. Pinky swear.
I'm wicked empowered despite the flabby abs.
In the next few blogs I’ll be sharing ways to strengthen the conscious mind, defining self-care, and explaining how the brain is the puppet master for the rest of the body. It’s gonna be empowering!
